The Environmental Youth Alliance
To make our cities more habitable for all the earth's species (cities need birds and bugs too!) we need more plants, a lot more! The city suffers from pollution, heat exhaustion, and a lack of habitat...plants can help! Plants take in CO2 and release oxygen, they also have a cooling effect on our landscape, and provide food and shelter for all sorts of animals (including ourselves) & insects. However, sources of plant material in the city are rare, especially in low-income communities.
In the mid 90’s EYA worked with the Strathcona Community Garden Association to build a Community Nursery so plant material would be more readily available for urban agriculture and greening initiatives. Youth have been key in the development of the Nursery program and continue to provide educational workshops on plant propagation and environmental education so that city residents can learn how to use the nursery to their greatest benefit.
Each year we grow and harvest heirloom/heritage seeds in our Youth Garden and at the Strathcona Community Garden - these include food and flower crops as well as native species. Along with the Urban Seeds project, EYA staff, volunteers, and program participants also grow seedlings as a part of the project.
At workshops and gatherings in low-income neighbourhoods, we give away free seeds, seedlings, and trees to encourage and support more local food production and a greener city. These efforts are also a fantastic horticultural and leadership skill and knowledge development opportunity for all of the those who contribute to the project.
